In August, IEEE-Denver sponsored the Colorado Alternative Energy Workshop on Opportunities.  The workshop attracted over 250 attendees and took place at the Wolf Law Center at the University of Colorado - Boulder.  Speakers represented Business, Government, and Educational activities aimed at prospering economic growth of business and jobs pertaining to Energy and Alternative Energy

Clean Energy & the Northern Colorado Workforce
Kathy Gilliland, Director of the Northern Colorado Workforce Initiative

Ms Gilliland worked for Hewlett Packard and Agilent Technologies for 30 years in various professional capacities.  From 1993 to 2003, she was on the City Council for Loveland, of which the last 6 were as Mayor.  She was hired as the Director of the Northern Colorado Workforce Initiative in December of 2007 and has focused on being a conduit and connection point for workforce development efforts within Northern Colorado, connecting industry skill needs, educational/training institutes, and job-seekers, to formulate and support workforce solutions.  The Workforce initiative currently includes Larimer and Weld Counties, with plans for expansion to Boulder and Adams Counties, and initial work will focus on the Energy Industry.

Biofuels: Past, Present, and Future
J. Thomas McKinnon, Professor of Chemical Engineering, Colorado School of Mines

In addition to biofuels, his research interests include combustion chemistry, pyrolysis, and carbon nanomaterials. He is also the Chief Technology Officer of Novare Biofuels, Inc., a start-up company working to commercialize a cellulose-to-gasoline process.  He holds a BS from Cornell University and a PhD from MIT.

Harnessing Materials for Energy
Mani V. Manivannan, Associate Prof of Mechanical Engineering, Colorado State University

Dr. Mani Manivannan is an Associate Professor at CSU and his work involved research in energy technologies like solar cells, Li-ion battery, and fuel cells etc, which have potential to provide solution for energy sustainability. He has published over 50 peer-reviewed articles, over 150 technical articles, and has more than 25 issued US and World patents.

 


Wind Energy - Promise and Challenge
Yih-huei Wan, Senior Engineer at the National Wind Technology Center of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory

He works on technical and policy issues related to integrating wind power into electric grid.  Subject topics include renewable energy capacity credit, operational impacts of intermittent energy sources on operations, distributed generation, and transmission constraints. Currently he is managing the Wind Farm Monitoring program that collects and analyzes long-term, high-frequency wind power output data from several large commercial wind farms in the Midwest and Texas.  He has a B.S. and a M.S. degree, both in Electric Engineering.  He is a registered professional engineer.
